February 2019 Off Road club race

8th scale Buggy class:

The biggest surprise of the day was the performance of a newcomer, Benno Spangenberg.  He showed up at the track only once or twice in the past few weeks, acquiring only a few hours of practice. And then he entered an official race with drivers with many, many years of experience.

And to top that, he sommer headed straight for the podium! Good job, Benno! Thank you Jacques Brits for coming all the way from Klerksdorp to act as Benno’s pit crew.

We anticipated a much bigger turnout, but had to be contented with five drivers only. The track had been in a good condition, but dust was definitely a factor. Uhm, it IS a dirt road, but nevertheless, it can be a bit annoying. The correct tires are of vital importance on a loose surface.

Starting this race report with the performance of Benno, doesn’t take anything away from the excellent driving skills of well known Tertius van Rooyen. This young man is in and out of the RC game for a couple years now. (Actually him and his dad, Martin, who is into Truggy driving.)

Tertius is capable of competing with the top RC guys in South Africa, he says he just want a bit of practice before he takes them on in National competitions.

Gavin Leiching paid us a visit, but had a couple of hiccups during the course of the day. But he did pocket one win and one 2nd place.

The other nice surprise of the day was that the prize giving was over even before lunch time, so everyone could still have spent a large part of Sunday with their family at home. That after four qualifier rounds and a 30 minute Final.

Best laps of each driver:

Tertius’s quickest lap – 47.58s

Gavin’s best lap – 51.56s

Benno’s fastest lap – 53.18s

Henry’s fastest lap - 56.60s

Riaan Bornman’s best lap – 59.4s

Overall:

  1. Tertius van Rooyen
  2. Benno Spangenberg
  3. Henry Ogden
