Meyerton Raceway recently hosted a Winter Fun Race, which included a number of Short Course trucks.

The idea started when we received a phone call - or was it an e mail – from a guy from Standerton Raceway.

Nick Iacovou told us that he and a couple of his fellow racers from Standerton were interested in paying us (Meyerton Raceway) a friendly visit.  Henry offered to set up the timing system for them and also hire a couple of marshals, to make their lives easier. They accepted this proposal and the appointment were sealed.

I then started to mention this friendly meeting on Facebook and it steamrolled onwards from then. More and more people, especially those with short course trucks, showed interest. But by then the nitro and electric 8^th scale buggies had already made known that they are coming to join in the fun, too. We even had a couple of truggies, joining this friendly race meeting.

By the time I mentioned the event on our website, nothing could have stopped us. Sunday 13 July 2014 was set aside for some dust-kicking off road fun!

That morning, 28 racers showed up at the track. This number includes 5 of our local club members, the three very enthusiastic Porra cousins, JP, Pedro and Leo and a couple of guys from Jo’burg area.  Even an old Meyerton Raceway member, Alex Abbott, took his nitro truggy from the shelf to come and play for a chance. He apparently enjoyed it, because he had been back the week after that!

The race didn’t start too early, because we wanted to give the visitors ample time to stop for coffee on their way to Meyerton. But at our canteen we also had the urn boiling and the cappuccinos waiting for those who did not stop at the Block House filling station. The morning temperature was probably a few degrees beneath zero, but fortunately the weather turned out great later in the day.

Shortly after 10 we printed a squatting list with 4 heats. One for Electric buggies, one for nitro buggies, one for 4-wheel short course trucks and one for 2-wheel drive short course trucks.

The Standerton RC team looked impressive in their club shirts, but so did the Meyerton team…haha  ..

The atmosphere was great, the timing system behaved and I can safely say that a great racing day was had by all of us.

Electric Buggies

Heat 1 : Nick Iacovou took this race with a best lap of 61.86 seconds

In the 2^nd heat Luanco Eksteen took the 1^st position, with Nick in second place. But Nick again did the fastest lap, 59.63 seconds.

The 3^rd heat saw Pieter Plaas in the lead, but this time around, it was Mario who had the fastest lap, 61.87 seconds.

ELECTRIC BUGGY OVERALL RESULTS:

1. Pieter Plaas

3. Paul Els

Nitro Bugges:

Heat 1: JP Pessoa won this race, with Pedro at his heels. JP’s fastest lap was 51. 07 seconds and Pedro’s fastest lap 50.86sec

Heat 2 : This time Pedro ended 1^st with a fastest lap of 50.38 sec. JP was behind him and his best lap was 50.08 sec

Heat 3 : Again it was Pedro who took the first place and JP had to settle for 2^nd place. Pedro’s average lap time was more than a second faster than JP’s, although JP raced a very fast 50.8 sec lap.

NITRO BUGGY FINAL - 20 min

1. JP Pessoa
2. Pedro Maldonado
3. Leo de Oliveira

JP managed to do a fastest lap of 50.18 sec. Excellent!

 

 

4-wheel drive short Course:

Heat 1 ; Luanco Eksteen wen hierdie race met Pieter Plaas op sy hakke. Paul Els eindig in die 3 de plek, maar is die ou met die vinigste lap time, naamlik 62 sekondes. Nick het nie gery nie. DNS

Heat 2 : Pieter Plaas wen nou,  met Paul in die 2de plek en Nick 3de en Luanco laaste.

Paul  doen die beste lap, in 62 sekondes.

Heat 3 : Pieter Plaas wen weer. Luanco is 2de en Paul 3de. Nick het ‘n DNS (Did Not Start) Die beste lap word aangeteken deur Paul Els in 60.05 sekondes.

4-WHEEL OVERALL RESULT:

1. Paul Els
2. Pieter Plaas
3. Luanco Eksteen

Pieter doen ‘n lap van net 59.3 sekondes… vinnigste lap vir die dag in hierdie klas.

 

2-wheel drive Short Course

Heat 1 : JP Pessoa takes 1^st place with Charel van Biljon behind him. Mario de Melo ended in third place. The fastest lap however belongs to Mark Myburg, who evidently

experienced some serious car trouble, because he ended in 10^th place!

Heat 2 : Charel won this race with Henco Reyneke behind him and JP in 3^rd place.

Charel also raced the fastest lap. 62.4 sec. Mark again suffered with car trouble.

Heat 3: Once again Charel won and again it was Henco in 2^nd place. This time Mark Myburg left his car trouble behind and ended in 3^rd place. But Charel was the uncontested winner with a best lap of 60.7 seconds. Oh, and now it was JP with the car trouble…he had a DNS.
