A bit of background info: The founding meeting was held at the home of Henry Ogden, that is adjacent to the tracks, on December 10 th 2008.
Meyerton Raceway recently hosted a very successful Tamiya Cup. The excitement built up as Henry and his team prepared the track for this prestigious event on the On Road calendar.
The track was rolled with a 900kg Bomac – not too heavy to damage the tar track, but with enough weight to smooth away most of the bumps. The markings and the curve paintwork was re-done and we were very fortunate to have the labour sponsored by a benefactor. The participants were given a choice too either hire a spot under our covered shed or bring their own gazebo’s and tables. It worked well with the guys, because not everyone drives a vehicle big enough for all their RC stuff as well as a gazebo chair and table.
Scrutinizing was done by Marius Burger and his friend Gert Swart. The both of them are excellent drivers, but decided that they have enough trophies and since they are now members at Meyerton Raceway, they will rather put their knowledge to good use and perform this tedious task for the hosting club.
What was extra ordinary about this event for Meyerton Raceway, is that the guys left the driving to the ladies this time around. 5 of the club’s female members took part, all in the Stock Touring class. The club boasts that at least 1 of these ladies achieved a podium place. Well done Ronel Bann!
Another remarkable fact is all the very young children that took part in this race. And boy!.. are they good?! It is also so nice to see all the father–and-son teams. This is really a family hobby/sport, if ever there was one! From pre-school kids to moms and dads and even grandparents with lots of grey hair…enjoying the same thing and competing on equal levels.
91 entries – some from very far away - were divided into the following classes: Stock Touring, Front Wheel Drive Touring, 4-wheel drive GT, Mini Chassis, Formula 1 class, Super Stock and Open Stock Touring.
The overall feeling at the end of the day was that a pleasant day was had by all and that the event was successfully hosted by Meyerton Raceway. In fact: The TC organizers were beyond pleased….a feather in our cap!
