A bit of background info: The founding meeting was held at the home of Henry Ogden, that is adjacent to the tracks, on December 10 th 2008.
The whole idea behind starting this new series at Meyerton Raceway was to offer those who are not interested in SARDA National events, the opportunity to compete in at least 4 serious, competitive races a year. It was in fact a couple of on-road guys that approached Henry with the request to start a series like the very successful RCX, but in this case for the on road side. We even adapted the entry fee to match that of the off-road RCX series.
We also meant it to be a competition where the driver decides in what class he/she wants to excel in, like he/she would have for a National event. Normal club races - especially for club members – are cheap enough to race in two or more classes, but we really were of the opinion that competitors in the Shootout would more likely only enter for one, or at most, two classes. We regret any misunderstanding regarding the aim of this competition. We still have three dates set out for this series for 2016 and we hope that it will still attract more interest. The next leg will be on May 1st.
THE RACE:
We ran a beginner class, because we had two kids that entered and they were really looking forward to race on this day, but Henry decided not to include this class into the Shootout series. We did however save their scores as normal club race points, as part of the club’s 6 month series.
Overall Beginners:
TTO1 Stock class:
Father and son team Hannes and Chris Nel took the lead from the start and never let it slipped out of their hands. Rolan Ferreira and Daniel Kusner took turns to end in 3rd position. Marika Claes and Henk Boeree used the opportunity to brush up on their driving skills. Fastest lap in this class: Hannes Nel – 20.00 sec. Excellent!!
Overall results TTO1:
Electric Mini:
Warren Cooper is the owner of a very fast Mini. He is also a very skilled driver, so whether his Mini is totally legal or not, I am not sure, but I can testify that this guy and his Mini make mean team! Warren dominated this class and won 4 out of the 5 legs for the day. But fascinatingly enough, it was in the Round that he did not win, that he got his fastest lap for the day! 18.42 sec. Wow! That is pretty fast for a Mini.
Overall results for Mini Class:
540 Stock Touring:
Chazlee Cooper and Daniel Kusner swept the floor with Anette and Johnny Claes for the first two Rounds. But then Johnny picked up speed and fought his way up to the top. Anette (that’s me) was by no means a match for her male competitors, but she did achieve her personal best laps ever, breaking through the 22 seconds barrier. Fastest lap for the day in this class: Chazlee – 17.76 sec. Well done!!
Overall 540 results:
21.5 Touring:
Stiffer completion here; the 7 rivals were of equally good ability. Rudi Botes eventually joined us in a more serious competition since he joined the club last year, and he was doing really well! But then he sadly fell sick and left after lunch time. Best lap in this class – Warren Cooper – 18.23 sec.
Overall results for 21.5:
17.5 Touring:
Andre Steenekamp never managed to break through the 17 sec barrier on this day, but his average lap time was more than adequate to carry him through to the 1st place on the podium. George Symes and Yas Okauchi both achieved several laps of less than 17 seconds, but their average lap time was just not good enough to beat André. Best lap for the day in this class: Yas Okauchi -16.76 sec .
17.5 Overall :
1. André Steenekamp
2. Yas Okauchi
3. George Symes
13.5 Touring:
Young Chazlee Cooper had to race against the two very skilled Nels. All three of them drove faster and faster as the day progressed. Both Hannes and Chris unfortunately had a turn to put up with a DNS and at the end it was Chazlee who walked away with the proverbial crown. Chazlee’s best lap - 16.56 sec
Overall results in 13.5 touring:
Award for Best presented RC body: George Symes. Congratulations!
