A bit of background info: The founding meeting was held at the home of Henry Ogden, that is adjacent to the tracks, on December 10 th 2008.
What a cold start to this race meeting?! With a temperature reading of -4 degrees, a person has to ask: “Have we lost our minds?” I mean, having a home and a nice warm bed, what on earth urge any person to leave that all behind to endure this kind of weather? Well, addiction (to nitro) may just be your answer..
The race started late, because most of the drivers still had to do some adjustments to their cars. And André forgot his control radio at home. It is quite a distance, but nobody really minded. They were just too happy to use the time to see how the cold tar track will influence their GT’s tyres.
Leon van Rooyen entered this RC discipline for the very first time. He arrived just after the end of the 1st qualifier round, due to personal circumstances.
1/8th scale GT
Qualifier Round 1:
Piet kicked the day’s racing off with a victory over his rivals. His fastest lap – 18.37sec
Esmarie followed shortly to end 2nd and hubby Francois came 3rd.
Henry Ogden and André Steenekamp both struggled with their cars and quit the race early on. Johan Korff did not start.
Qualifier Round 2:
Andre won this round, after completing 20 laps in 6 minutes. Best lap – 17.14 Wow!
Leon, after arriving late, raced beautifully with his newly acquired GT and ended 2nd. Leon boasts a best lap of 18.59s
Johan Korff now joined the other drivers and achieved a 3rd place.
Esmarie and Henry quit early on and Francois and Piet did not start.
Qualifier Round 3:
André won yet again, this time with even faster laps. 16.89s. Great stuff!
Leon ended 2nd again, also improving on his previous best lap by now doing 18.15s.
Esmarie, notwithstanding a car that didn’t want to take a proper grip, still managed to cross the finishing line 3rd.
This time Korff retired after 4 laps.
Neither Piet, Henry or Francois started.
FINAL GT :
This 30 minute race was convincingly won by Piet du Toit. He completed 89 laps, of which the fastest one had been 16.98 sec.
Francois, after struggling throughout all the qualifiers, took the second place overall. We are happy for you, Francois.
Esmarie, with one lap less than hubby Francois, ended 3rd.
André , who was doing so well, encountered car trouble after 16 laps. He stripped not one, but TWO gears on his GT! He however managed to fix it and returned to the driver stand after almost 12 minutes and completed the race. What a bummer!
Leon van Rooyen was also out of the race for almost 12 minutes. He too made a comeback after fixing whatever went wrong.
Johan Korff and Henry did not start. Johan‘s GT had a blown motor and Henry’s car kept on stripping gears.
Stripped gears were at the order of the day.
